Kentucky Derby Favorite Disappoints In Latest Race

After defeating Bolt d’Oro at the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, Good Magic, the former Kentucky Derby favorite, became the favorite to win the Kentucky Derby and was expected to dominate the remaining races leading up to the Derby.

However, in his first race since the Breeders’ Cup, Good Magic did not look like the same horse that defeated Bolt d’ Oro, losing the Fountain of Youth race to Promises Fulfilled, a horse that has won three of his four races and finished third in the other.

Despite Good Magic finishing third, he will still be considered one of the favorites to win the Derby, but his odds to win will be affected by the outcome of this race. If he wants to regain his position as the favorite to win the Derby, he will need to have better performances in the upcoming races.

The win for Promises Fulfilled all but guarantees him a spot at the Kentucky Derby thanks to the 50 points he received from the race. Trainer Dale Romans also added that he was one of the fastest horses he has ever trained.

“I’ve had a few horses in my career that can just go fast from beginning to end and have that speed and stamina,” Romans said. “Roses in May was one of them, and this is probably my second one.”

“For a horse that got out like he did and getting a little bit of an injury in the race, getting out all the way like he did and to still only get beat three lengths, I knew he was a special horse,” Romans said.

Promises Fulfilled will get his first G1 racing experience at the end of the month when he runs in the Florida Derby. If he runs as well as he did at the Fountain of Youth race, expect him to become one of the favorites to win the Kentucky Derby.
