Kentucky Derby 147 Points Bubble

Today we have a quick look at the Kentucky Derby 147 points bubble. The 2021 Kentucky Derby is less than two months away, which means we are in the thick of the Derby prep races. With the Gotham Stakes (G3), Tampa Bay Derby (G2) and San Felipe (G2) out of the way, it’s time to take a look at who’s in and out of the Kentucky Derby points bubble.

Life is Good, 60 points
The three-year-old Bob Baffert Trained colt is one of the top contenders to win the Kentucky Derby. Sound familiar? He won the Sham Stakes (G2) in January. Also, followed it up with an impressive win at Santa Anita on Saturday, which moved him into a tie atop the leaderboard with 60 points.

Weyburn, 50 points
Despite a three-month layoff, Pioneerof the Nile’s son returned to the track with a win at the Gotham Stakes on Saturday, giving him two wins in his last two starts, and making home a potential starter in the Kentucky Derby. The only thing currently keeping him out of the race is the late nomination fee.

Helium, 50 points
Even though his first two races were on short tracks, Helium showed he has the stamina to handle the longer tracks by winning the Tampa Bay Derby on Saturday, giving him enough points to start at the Kentucky Derby. However, he will have to be nominated later this month, which trainer Mark Casse said was the plan on Sunday.

On the Bubble

Medina Spirit, 34 points
Medina Spirit would already be in if it didn’t have to compete with stablemate Life is Good. Now, Medina Spirit finished right behind Life is Good for the second time on Saturday. Even though the 34 points he has would be enough to get in the Derby in most years, it took as many as 40 points to qualify in 2019, which is why he remain on the bubble.
