Trainers Gearing Up For Biggest Kentucky Derby Qualification Race

The Dubai World Cup is known as the race with the biggest purse in horse racing, but it is also one of the biggest Kentucky Derby qualifiers because the winning horse gets awarded 100 qualification points for the Kentucky Derby. The Dubai World Cup is set to take place at the end of March.

With the largest purse in horse racing and the 100 Kentucky Derby qualification points on the line, it isn’t surprising that a lot of the top trainers send their horses to Dubai in hopes of winning the prize and the points.

Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, whose horse won the Dubai World Cup last year, is back again this year and will be trying to win the race for the second consecutive season, which will give him his fourth win in Dubai.

Last year, Arrogate took the top spot for Baffert. In 1998 it was Silver Charm, and Captain Steve in 2001. Gary and Mary West’s West Coast is the reigning American champion 3-year-old colt.

“West Coast is a big, tough, horse and he shipped well and is carrying his weight well,” Baffert said. “I gave him a little easy half-mile and he looked great doing it. He’s happy and doing great and that’s all you can ask for at this stage.”

“He needs to show up and run his race,” Baffert said. “He should be the favorite based on what he’s accomplished. He’s run into some pretty nice horses and Gun Runner (second to Arrogate in 2017) is not in there and there’s no Arrogate. I’ve been very fortunate. Every time I’ve gone over with the favorite I’ve been lucky to win it. Hopefully, that trend continues, but you still need racing luck.”

Mubtaahij, which is trained by Baffert and owned by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Kalifa Saaed Al Maktoum, finished fourth last year, after finishing second to California Chrome in 2016.

“That’s all we wanted to do today,” said Baffert. “We’re going to go easy from here. They won’t come out on the track tomorrow. They’ll just walk and then jog and gallop up to the race on Saturday. We’re looking forward to it, but this race is a real challenge for a trainer, for me. It’s totally different (from racing in America). You have to really know your horse and understand how they’re responding. It’s not easy, but to win the big prize is really exciting and I feel good about both horses.”
