Uncle Chuck Gives Baffert another Kentucky Derby Hopeful

A couple of months ago, Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert had three horses that were considered favorites to win the Kentucky Derby. Talk about good odds.

However, an injury forced him to retire Nadal. One of the early favorites to win the Kentucky Derby and a less serious injury to Charlatan will force the three-year-old colt to miss the Derby.

Secondly, Authentic, another favorite to win the Derby. Lost to Honor A.P. at the Santa Anita Derby.

Despite the recent setbacks, Baffert still has a chance to win his sixth Kentucky Derby thanks to Uncle Chuck winning the Grade 3 $150,000 Los Alamitos Derby by an easy four lengths on Saturday.

Therefore, Uncle Chuck took the lead on the far turn. Also, cruised to an easy win in the diminished four-horse race. It was worth 20 points toward qualifying for the Kentucky Derby, not near enough to make the 20-horse field. He will need a similar performance in his next prep race to make the Kentucky Derby field on Sept. 5.

“He’s learning quickly. Also, he has brilliance,” Baffert said. “I was impressed. I think we just saw something pretty special, and he’s been special from day one. He’s bred to be any kind [of horse].

“We’re just learning more about Uncle Chuck. He’s still pretty green, but he’s got gears. [Jockey] Luis [Saez] was excited about him, and I think he’s one of the top riders in the country. He said [Uncle Chuck] is still learning and he’s got a lot of improvement in him. He was full of himself when he came back. It’s exciting.”

Saez, who rode Uncle Chuck in place of his regular jockey Mike Smith, was impressed with the three-year-old’s performance.

“He broke great, and I just left him alone,” Saez said. “He was doing it easy all the way. When I showed him the whip, he took off. He’s a very nice colt.”
