Bob Baffert Eyeing Rebel Stakes After San Felipe Stakes Gets Cancelled

Horse racing betting fans were anticipating an exciting weekend at the San Felipe Stakes, which was scheduled to feature two of the top Kentucky Derby contenders, the Bob Baffert trained Improbable and Game Winner. Where does Rebel Stakes fit in?

However, the race was cancelled due to weather, leaving the fans disappointed. Also, this will be a key Kentucky Derby prep race.

The good news is even though fans didn’t get to see the Derby favorites go head-to-head, they will still get a chance to see the two horses race because Baffert plans to have them run at the Rebel Stakes this weekend.

However, they are expected to run in different races and won’t go up against one another.

“They can always come up with something, but today I’m really happy with both of them,” Baffert said. “Really didn’t want to ship them, but didn’t have a choice.”

During his practice run, Improbable went five furlongs in 59.20 seconds. Of course, this made Bob Baffert proud.

Later in the morning, Game Winner ran the same distance in 59.80 seconds.

“They bounce over it,” Baffert said. “The track has always been a safe, fast track. It has to be, because when they run quarter horses, they can’t scramble. At Santa Anita, it’s a heavier track. When they come over here, they get over the top. It’s like they kick their boots off.”

“I just feel really good about my two horses. They worked really well.

They worked the way I wanted them to work.” In addition, the next Kentucky Derby prep race should be the telling point.

According to Jennifer Hoyt, Oaklawn’s head of media relations, Improbable and Game Winner aren’t the only San Felipe Stakes horses that have been entered in the Rebel Stakes.

“It looks like we’re pretty much getting the entire San Felipe field” with others coming from California on a Wednesday flight,” Hoyt said.

“Jerry Hollendorfer will ship Gunmetal Gray and Galilean; Richard Mandella should have on a plane Omaha Beach and Extra Hope; and Keith Desormeaux is sending only Easy Shot, as Sueno developed a quarter crack.”

“We never dreamed the day would come they would close down Santa Anita, but we’re getting through it,” Baffert added. “The main thing is that the 3-year-olds, they worked well. They’re coming up there. I think it’s very nice of them to want to split that race. That’s the key thing.”

That being said, Bob Baffert will have his horses prepped for the 2019 Kentucky Derby.
